Lighthouses

October 11, 2007

bodie_lighthouse2.JPGWe saw a lot of cool lighthouses. Some light house was so old, but they were sealed up.  Some are famous and some of the lighthouses are where Blackbeard’s hide out was.  And some lighthouses are where people stayed (I heard on the video). They were the lighthouse Head Keeper and some had familes or were fishermen.

Blackbeard

September 28, 2007

Pirate FlagOver 300 years ago Blackbeard sailed these waters of North Carolina.  Blackbeard had 40 cannons on Q.A.R.  In 1680 they called Blackbeard by his real name, Edward Teach.  They hung Blackbeard with something like a body cage.  Blackbeard’s head body disappeared from the tree they hung him on!

I played Pamlico Pirates, a multiplication game.  You have to get one color of marker (13 markers) then we get two dies each.  Roll the die if it lands on let’s say 6 and 3, you add the 6+3=9, you cover up nine with your marker.  The one with all 12 numbers covered wins.

Women can be pirates because Anne Bonny and Mary Reed disguised themselves in men’s clothes.  I think pirates ate fish and drunk root beer.  One of the rules was being marooned on an island in the middle of the sea if you were caught stealing off the ship.

Beads cut from seashells were called wampum.  WAmpum was used for making belts to record information and great events.  Families lived in a longhouse.  They put their tools in the house.  Corn can be more colores than just yellow.  They planted teir corn different ways.  The corn was green, red and yellow.  For fertalizer, they used fish. Indians used pictures as letters.

North Carolina Alive Overview

September 7, 2007

During N.C. Alive we did alot of things.  The first thing we did was watch a little video clip about the expectations wanted in N.C. Alive.  Then we wrote our agenda.  Then we had to gather up in our small group.  When we all got gathered up we looked at some magazines. The magazines showed some places in North Carolina.  When we finished looking at the magazines we watched a video.  The video showed things like the Mountains, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain.  I didn’t know that there was a place where kids can go and do activities and learn about nature.  I also didn’t know that by dropping a plate with string attached to it you could measure the depth of the water.  During the video we got to have a snack.  After that we did some map work. One of the maps was the three regions.  The other map was about locating North America, United States, North Carolina, and then Catawba County.  Then our teachers showed us how to make a scrapbook. Then we did some more group work.
